LGBTQIA+

Being a member of a marginalized group presents its own set of distinctive difficulties.  At times, it can be overwhelming to navigate these challenges alone. As your therapist, I am here to help you with the necessary support and guidance as you embark on your journey towards wholeness and well-being.

Some of the common stressors you might be facing include:

  • Concealing your true identity.  The ongoing effort to hide one's true self can lead to chronic stress and emotional fatigue. This can result in anxiety and depression.  Together we can explore your identity in a safe, non-judgmental space.

  • Experiencing discrimination.  Facing unequal rights in society can cause feelings of frustration and hopelessness.  This can impact your relationships, both personal and professional.  By providing support and validation we can work to set boundaries and find healthy support systems.

  • Fear of rejection.  Anticipating or experiencing rejection from family and friends can be emotionally devastating, which can lead to increased anxiety and trauma.  We will address your fears by reframing thoughts and developing healthy coping skills.

  • For family members and friends they can experience a lack of knowledge and understanding.  This could lead to conflict and relationship struggles.  Providing psychoeducation and finding proper support can help those struggling with a loved one in this community.

My goal is to help individuals process their experiences, whether your are part of the LGBTQIA+ community or a friend or family member.   My counseling approach seeks to provide, support, understanding, goals, and guidance to improve quality of life and relationships.

Family

Adoption

Adoption is a multifaceted experience that deeply affects all parties involved. Recognizing the breadth of these impacts, as your therapist, I am committed to providing a supportive environment to help navigate a multitude of concerns.

Some common stressors you might be experiencing include:

  • Self-identity.  It is not uncommon to have questions about your heritage, culture and biological roots. Who am I, where did I come, where do I fit in?  These are valid questions that can foster stress, anxiety, and confusion. I can assist you in developing a cohesive personal identity that includes your biological and adoptive stories.

  • Attachment and relationships. You might have feelings of not being strongly connected or able to relate.  We can work together to develop healthy bonding and navigate relational challenges.

  • Adoption related stressors.  Unfortunately, there are societal perceptions and stigmas related to adoption. Together we can develop coping mechanisms for dealing with these.

I am here for you in whatever you need when it comes to the adoption community.  Individuals experiences will vary significantly, as your therapist, I will address and help you work through these emotional struggles and life challenges.

My Story

 Troy Hylan, LPC

As a member of the LGBTQI+ community and an adoptee, I possess a unique perspective that is informed by my own life experiences. Through my work as a therapist, I am able to utilize these experiences in order to better understand the struggles, fears, and stress that are often experienced by those in similar situations. My personal insight into the challenges faced by marginalized individuals allows me to provide specialized therapies that are tailored to meet their specific needs.
In particular, I am passionate about helping others navigate the shared challenges of being both a member of a marginalized community and an adoptee, two identities that may impact one's sense of self and wellbeing. Through the therapeutic journey that we embark on together, I am committed to helping clients achieve greater meaning, purpose, and contentment in their lives. Drawing on my own experiences, as well as my professional training as a therapist, I offer clients a safe and supportive environment to explore their unique challenges, develop coping strategies, and cultivate a more fulfilling life.
